epirus kayak

You can do a numerous things in Epirus. Especially Kayak sports since Epirus has a ton of places who are extremely suitable for such.

Let’s see a number of those, as sent from Active Nature.

Wild-water kayak

The wild-water kayak boat is made from durable polyethylene and the length of the boat starts from 2.2m up to 3.20m, designed for rushing waters (rivers). The kayaker is seated while rowing, with a paddle which has the edges of the 2 ladles. The vessel uses a special Neoprene hood (spray deck), the apron, to stop waters from entering into the kayak. The kayak is much more flexible than a rafting boat, and the current of the river is what determines its course as we paddle. Through our effort to avoid possible obstacles in our path, along with the increasing speed of the water plus the ripples of it, we will experience our adrenaline to rise into big heights.

Required Equipment: Neoprene suit, helmet, life jacket, neoprene shoes.

The kayak is more extreme than rafting and needs special training for someone to drive down the river safely. The training includes practical and theoretical lessons of the following:

  • Knowledge of equipment, kayak and usage of it
  • Rivers morphology
  • Kayak driving techniques
  • Adaptation techniques depending on the situation/event factors (water level, current speed, weather conditions, number of crew members)
  • Rapid swimming
  • Rescue, first aid

Sea Kayak

Is it a canoe “thing” or a kayak thing? What are the differences?

The canoes are light, elongated vessels with no keel, powered by the muscular force of one or more rowers, who use paddle-double or single.

Originally, Native Americans made their canoes from lightweight wooden frames, dressed in from the tree barks, waterproofed with resin. The canoes were tailored to the needs of their manufacturers and nomadic life. Usually one or two rowers seated on them plus the carrying load. It was also so lightweight that the paddler could carry it on the top of his head for several miles, when circumstances forced him to leave waters.

The kayak is smaller than canoe, with stabbing bow and stern and usually with a single central opening. There is where the rower sits and uses a double-piece paddle with his feet spread onward out and buried in the front part. So his body, from the waist up seems to be an extension of his board. Eskimos built their kayaks from seal or other animal leathers in a wood (or from whale stays) frame and then put the animals grease to the kayak to waterproof it. Kayak literally means “boat hunting”. The paddler wears a waterproof cover around his waist (spray skirt) which is well secured onto the kayak, covering the opening and preventing water from penetrating the vessel. The kayaks due to its construction are lightweight and flexible mean.

Canoes and kayaks today are made from various materials and have many different usages. Modern plastics and fiberglass is the rule. Their length ranges from two and a half meters to four meters and they find use primarily to recreation and sports. There are different types: going down a river (whitewater) and touring (guidance), for one or more paddlers.

Canoes and kayaks gained great popularity in recent years. They allow people come into contact with nature with a fascinating way, alone or with friends, in one day or more and, finally, in intensity set by each one alone.

What kind of Sea Kayak you can do in the area?

A trip in Pamvotis Lake (Ioannina): The route starts from the premises in Limnopoula, Ioannina. We pass through the waters of Pamvotis on boats; we can see rare bird species hidden in the lake. Furthermore, we have the ability by the way to make a stop at the Island of Ioannina and climb onto climbing area of the Island. The path is characterized as easy and its duration is of 2’30 hours.
