Hiking in Kythnos Greece Island

If you enjoy hiking, then hiking in Kythnos island is a good choice because of its variety of paths.  It’ s a quiet, unspoiled island in Cyclades, ideal for relaxing, beautiful hiking trails and swimming in crystal clear waters.

Here you can find some proposed routes for your hiking in Kythnos experience.

Chora – Dryopida

This is a beautiful hiking route in the inland of the island. The walking time to picturesque village of Dryopída is almost 1h40.

Chora – St. Stefanos beach

On the right of the City Hall in Chora, there is a big sign that informs about most of the walks that start from Chora. You follow the trail and after 1h 20min you reach St. Stefanos beach.

Chora – Panagia tou Nikous – St. Georgios – St. Ioannis beach

It takes almost 20min to go to the amazing  monastery of Panagia tou Nikous , after it 1 h to reach St. Georgios and then finally 25 min to the beach of St. Ioannis.

Chora – Panagia tou Nikous – Profitis Ilias

You start from Chora and after 1h20 you arrive at the top of the monastery Profitis Ilias.

Chora – Loutra

Loutra village is well-known for its warm sulphurous spa-waters. The hiking time is almost 50 min. it’s an easy route, mostly run to the left of the asphalt road Chora – Loutra.

Merichas port – Vryokastro

From Merichas port, you follow the road to Episkopi. After half an hour of easy route from Episkopi you arrive at Vryokastro.  It was an ancient city of Kythnos, that was inhabited from the 10th B.C. up to the 7th A.D. century. The space is full of ruins of walls, foundations of temples and altars.

Merichas port – Kolona beach

Kolona beach is a narrow strip of golden sand that connects kythnos with the islet of St. Loukas, creating two beautiful bays. On top of St. Loukas island there is the church of St. Loukas, adding even more to the beauty of the amazing scenery. It is known as the most impressive beach in Kythnos. It takes a couple of hours from Merichas port. The north-western part of Kythnos, from the islet of Agios Loukas to the cape Kefalos, presents a particular natural interest and is included in the network Natura 2000.

Chora – Apokrousi – Kolona beach

This hike takes almost 2h and crosses a large part of the island from Chóra down to the beach of Apokrousi and even, if you want, to the beautiful  beach of Kolónna.  Apokrousi beach is considered the second best beach in Kythnos, after Kolona.

Loutra – Paleokastro

The hiking route leads to the medieval capital of Kythnos, to Paleokastro or Kastro of Orias, in the northern utmost of the island. During its hey-days there would have been more than 100 churches.  Around 1570 it was destroyed by the Turkish. Nowadays, there are parts of walls of a Venetian castle, ruins of houses and the  chapel of Agia Eleoúsa To Kástro. The view from there is really fantastic.

Dryopida – Lefkes

South-east of Dryopida, we find the small settlement Lefkes with a beautiful beach with sand and pebbles. An old mine is found near the settlement.

Episkopi – Dryopida

From Episkopi you can reach at Dryopida after one hour of hiking.

Dryopida – Cave Katafyki

Near Dryopida, we find the cave Katafyki, with stalactites and stalagmites formations. It’s  one of the largest undeveloped caves in Greece. A small part of it is accessible to the public.

Dryopida – Kalo Livadi – Panagia Kanala

This is a very nice hiking route that runs along the east coast of Kýthnos via the bay of Kalo Livadi to Kanala. It takes almost one hour to get to the beach of Kalo Livadi and you will need another hour to arrive at Panagia Kanala. The church of Panagia Kanala is the protector of the whole island. The village has nice coves and the only pine forest in Kythnos.
