Valia Calda National Park

The Valia Calda National Park is located at Pindos, Greece and is also know as National Park of Pindos. Valia Calda stands for “Warm Valley” according to a local dialect. The organization was formed at 1966 and it is one of the most important and most virgin national forests of Greece.

It is located between the Perfectures of Grevena and Ioannina and it stretches to 68.990 acres. In this area are included the valley of Valia Calda and Arkoudorema, plus the mountain of Ligkos and Mavrovouni. The National Park of Pindos is characterized by great biodiversity. It hosts more than 17 species of mammals, among them some rare and endangered ones like the brown bear, the wolf, the wild cat, the wild goat and the otter. Along these there are 70 kinds of birds, where among them are the king eagle and golden eagle. Also, 7 kinds of  amphibians, 10 of reptiles and an amazingly rich fauna of insects.

The park is covered with thick forests of beech and black pines up to 1.000-1.600 mt, while in higher altitudes (1.600-1.900 mt) the only trees that grow (due to extreme cold) is the Rombola (Pinus Leucodermis). Over 1.900 mt. beautiful alpine meadows are spread. A number of 415 plant species (among them 18 species of orchids) has been recorded so far, along with 86 species of mushrooms.

The “Outdoor Activities” company organizes weekly mountain trekking events at the Valia Calda Park and they know the whole area very well. These events take place from May to October with trekking over 2000 mt.  They carry more than 20 years of experience in mountain trekking as well as to all related mountain activities. They cooperate with “Valia Calda” shelter http://www katafigiovaliacalda.com (Greek language) and “Kerasies” guest houses (Greek language). For more information email: [email protected]
